Sound Mixes

soundmix This is the film trailer for the film The Sixth Sense. The sound effects, dialogue and music that has been used in this trailer really creates the setting and the effects for the genre Horror, they have specifically used syfy music and loud flashes, sirens, tinkering sounds and so many more to create the atmosphere of the music.

I have created a timeline of all the sounds up to fifty five seconds, as I have created this timeline I have noticed how their is so many more Diagetic sounds then their is Diagetic, I thought though before starting this time line that there would be more Non Diagetic sounds then their is diagetic sounds. The sounds in the first fifty five seconds consist of over sixteen different sounds, they use lots of different sounds, to create the atmosphere of the movie and what it is about, it help emphasises the camera work and to make the audience feel more interested and connected to the film.

Dialogue: Their is three different dialogue scenes through out the first fifty five seconds of the trailer, the dialogue consists of the main characters talking, which is Cole, his mum and the Dr. The first dialogue bit is when Cole is talking to his mum in the car about the accident up ahead, he's telling her what has happened, and then goes on to say how the woman who died in the accident is stood right next to his window. The next bit of dialogue, doesn't start till forty three seconds into the trailer and this is where Cole is upset, he doesn't talk in this scene, it's only his mum talking and she is trying to comfort him in this scene because he is upset and shaking. The last bit of dialogue which I have gone up to in the trailer starts from forty seven seconds and ends at fifty five seconds, which is where I thought would be a good point to stop analysing. In that scene it is Cole and the Dr talking about how he doesn't tell his mum about what is happening and how it makes him feel, this is because she doesn't look at him weirdly, like everybody else does at school.

Sound Effects: There are many different sound effects used through out the first fifty five seconds of the trailer, the main sound effects start at the beginning of the trailer and tend to end after about forty three seconds. At the very beginning of the trailer, their is many sounds which are all at once and I think they do this because it makes it seem like it's a busy scene and a lot of things are going on all at once. Right on six seconds you can hear a strike of a match, the flame lit and a siren of an emergency service vehicle. Then the camera works it way up the street, where you can hear lots of different car and outside noises going on, whilst their is a voice over, over the top of all that. The voice over starts from eight seconds into the trailer and ends at sixteen seconds, this is because it then turns into normal dialogue because now you can see the characters speaking. Other sound effects which happen later on in the trailer consist of a creek of a door, then the slam of it.

Music: Their is quite a lot of music in the first fifty five seconds, it doesn't seem to kick in till twenty five seconds into it. It's a syfy music sounds which kicks in with a beat, when Cole tells his mum how he can see the lady that has died in the accident stood right next to his window, this music carries on in the background, till forty seconds. At twenty nine seconds into the trailer their is a tinkering sound, which ends at thirty four seconds, and then again it picks back up at thirty eight seconds and finishes at forty seconds. Their are three different flash sounds, which happen at thirty five seconds, thirty eight seconds and then lastly at forty seconds.

There is a lot of different layering over my timeline, especially at the beginning, at the middle and the very end, this is to create an atmosphere for the audience and making them want more.

Most of the Diagetic sounds would probably have been filmed, when dialogue was happening, especially the strike of a match, the flame lit, the siren, the bus sound pulling up, car and outside noises. This probably weren't filmed separately because they all happen at once and they need car noise and every day sounds going on in the background of the car jam, other wise it would be to quiet and unrealistic.

Voice overs are very important parts of film trailers. It can provide narrative information, for the audience, create enigma, which will make the audience wanting more, it will really set the scene and atmosphere.

Sound Effects

Synchronous Sounds- are those sounds which are synchronised or matched with what is viewed, for example: If the film portrays a character playing the piano, the sounds of the piano are projected.

Asynchronous Sound Effects- are not matched with a visible source of the sound on the screen. Such sounds are included so as to provide an appropriate emotional nuance, and they may also add to the realism of the film, for example: a film maker might opt to include the background sound of an ambulance's siren while the foreground sound and image portrays an arguing couple.
