We had to go out and get some primary research, from students in our college. We went out and filmed all their responses on our iphones, we really wanted some primary research on the specific genre which we are looking into making our horror trailer and that is the horror genre. Before we started film each and every student we asked them if they were okay if we could put these videos onto youtube, they all said that was fine.
We asked the students several different questions about our genre, which were:
1. What do you expect from a horror genre?
2. What are your most memorable horror films and why?
3. How do you expect to feel watching a horror film?
4. What attracts you to this poster first? *we handed student a poster*
5.What locations do you expect to see in a horror film?
6. What do you expect the antagonist to be like?
7. What do you expect to see on a horror poster?
This students most memorable horror film, which she really enjoyed was Paranormal Activity, as this is because she didn't know what to expect from it and what was going to happen next. She said that she would expect to hear a lot of scary music, either in the background, whilst characters are speaking, or when its in dark creepy locations. She even said that if you turned the music down on Paranormal Activity it wouldn't be as half as scary, this was a very big point for us, as obviously we want our audience to be scared by our horror trailer, so we are going to have to make some good quality music, which is scary. We have many thoughts into where the location for our horror trailer will be filmed, such as wet or haunted houses, the weather would effect the trailer so much as it would seem more scary if it was thundering and lightning as you wouldn't be able to escape from it. We need to find a good location , where we can create a horror vibe from it. When we asked the student about the poster, what she liked most was that their was direct eye contact with the audience, it seemed very enticing. We know need to decide on what model to use for our film poster as this student found this model very attractive, which made her want to go and see the film, so we really need to think about who our prime audience is, and who our film poster will appeal to.
This student expects to feel like she is on the edge of her seat when she is watching a horror film as it builds up the suspense, its very tense. She said her most memorable horror film was The Woman In Black, as it seemed very realistic and creepy, this would make you more scared if it seemed as though it would be realistic. It would be great if we thought up a great plot which seemed realistic as then the audience would feel more scared as they think that this might actually happen. When we asked her about what she thought associated with Horror, she came up with ideas such as dark woods, blood and goriness, as well as isolated locations, this would seem very scary as there would be no where to escape to. She said that the antagonist should be a creepy old man, as she found this the most scariest. When we showed her the film poster she really liked the expressions that thee model was making as it seemed mischievous and as though he had something to tell the audience, it seemed as though it was a very image, as she was very drawn in. As this student seemed to mention about the expression of the model, we should now think about when we take the images for our film poster that we think a lot about how the models face and expression should be portrayed, we don't want her to be smiling with teeth, as that wouldn't go with our genre of film, so we are definately going to have to think about that one.
We found out very quickly that the film 'Paranormal Activity' is one that people seem to find as their most memorable horror film because it makes you question the fact that, maybes could this happen in real life? This student said he would expect to see ghosts and paranormal activity creatures in a horror film, but not just that, as well as them being set in very remote/ isolated areas, so there is no were to go, you can't leave, or also in creepy looking woods. This student said that the bold lettering of the magazines name stood out to him the most, as it seemed eye catching and as if it was saying something very important. We are definiately going to have look into very bold fonts, for our magazine cover as we want them to draw the eye in, but also so they are very clear to read.
Whilst we were filming this students response we accidentally broke it into two separate videos. This student felt very strongly about how the music should be in a horror trailer, she said how she would expect to hear many different sounds through out it, but also different pitches, such as a violin being played in a high note, this would be for when something big was happening in the film, but then low notes to build up the tempo of the scenes. The most memorable horror film she thought of was 'Orphan' and what she said that really stuck with us, was that the scary scenes normally happen at night time, but that's why she liked the orphan, as it was different because all that stuff happened through out the day time, which made the film seem scary in that way, also you wouldn't expect it to happen then, so it made you feel very jumping and as if you were on the edge of your seat. When we asked about locations, she came up with dark woods, basements, dark houses and dark corners, it seems to be when we have asked other students as well that they think the location should be either dark, or in a woods, or isolated locations, so we are definitely going to have to take that into consideration. For the antagonist she came up with either a creepy child, either a boy or girl, as this would seem more scary if it was a child that was possessed or something. She said for the film poster she would expect to see distorted text, with blood, and also a lot of black and white colours, another good point she made was that she would be interested and to make the film poster different, instead of having dark colours you could change it up, so it was bright colours, as then the audience would seem confused and would want to go and see it, to see what it was about. We are definitely going to have to think a good colour scheme for our film poster as we wanting it to be catchy towards the eye, but not to dull that it doesn't stand out, so maybes just one colour would work with the black and white scheme, such a red as this could be portrayed as blood and scary.
